for solo euphonium and brass quintet

MIC

Commissioned by Katrine Delp.

A mini-concerto for euphonium and brass quintet. The idea for the instrumentation came from a concert I heard in Manchester in 2010. Euphonium-star David Thornton did a recital with brass quintet that was very interesting. A fascintating combination of instrument.

When I started to work on the piece I decided to write something light-hearted. I kind of improvised the piece based on small rhythmic ideas and a few intervals I wanted to focus on.

The overall form is A-B-A, very common for a concerto. The middle section is slow, the two outer sections are lively and rhythmic.

The solo part explores both glissando-effects and quarter tones.
